Sesimbra

Sesimbra is a coastal resort town on the Atlantic seaboard, roughly 40 kilometres south of Lisbon, within the Setúbal district. The settlement has retained its character as a fishing village, set beneath a 12th-century Moorish castle that offers sweeping views over the bay and ocean. The seafront, lined with restaurants specialising in seafood—particularly spider crab (santola) and freshly landed grilled fish—remains lively throughout the year thanks to an ongoing local fishing trade. The main beach, sheltered within the bay, generally enjoys calm waters, making it popular for swimming and watersports. Nearby, the Arrábida Natural Park features wooded hills that drop straight into the sea, including coves such as Portinho da Arrábida that draw large numbers of visitors in summer. Further south, Cape Espichel, with its lighthouse and cliffs, provides a more secluded vantage point over the Atlantic. The mild Mediterranean-influenced climate, pleasant for much of the year, supports outdoor pursuits such as coastal walking and scuba diving, the latter popular around the area's rocky seabeds.
