Montignac

Montignac is a small town in the Dordogne, nestled on the banks of the River Vézère in the Périgord Noir region. It is internationally known for its proximity to the Lascaux cave, famous for its prehistoric rock paintings dating back some 17,000 years, discovered in 1940. As the original cave is closed to the public to preserve the artwork, visitors instead explore its replica, Lascaux IV, an international centre for cave art located just a few minutes from the town centre. The town itself retains a medieval charm, with timber-framed houses, cobbled streets and a traditional market. The Vézère Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides a scenic setting for walking, canoeing and visiting other prehistoric sites nearby, such as Les Eyzies-de-Tayac. The region is also renowned for its Périgord cuisine, with foie gras, walnuts, truffles and confits among the local specialities found in shops and restaurants. Montignac therefore makes an excellent base for exploring the prehistoric and cultural heritage of the Périgord Noir, while enjoying an authentic rural setting.
