Turenne

Turenne is a hilltop village in the Limousin region, in the Corrèze department, recognised as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages. Overlooked by the remains of its former viscounty castle, including the César tower and the Trésor tower, the village rises on a limestone outcrop in the heart of the Brive basin. Cobbled lanes lined with golden stone houses, roofed in slate or traditional lauze, wind up towards the collegiate church, offering sweeping views over orchards and rooftops below. Turenne was once the seat of an independent viscounty, remaining outside royal French control until the 17th century, which accounts for its remarkably well-preserved architectural heritage. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking, with walnut groves, meadows and sunken lanes typical of the Corrèze landscape. The area is also known for its caves and sinkholes, including the nearby Gouffre de la Fage. Turenne lies close to Collonges-la-Rouge and Brive-la-Gaillarde, making it a convenient base for exploring southern Corrèze. The mild, temperate climate suits visits from spring through to autumn.
