Barneville Carteret

Barneville-Carteret is a coastal town in the Cotentin peninsula, Manche department, formed by the merger of Barneville-sur-Mer, Carteret and Barneville-Plage. It is known for its wide sandy beaches, particularly Barneville-Plage, and for the charm of Carteret harbour, nestled between the headland and the dunes. The lighthouse at Carteret, perched on the cliff, offers sweeping views over the English Channel and, on clear days, towards the Channel Islands, especially Jersey, which can be reached by ferry from the harbour. The resort retains a traditional seaside character, with early 20th-century villas and a casino. The coastal footpath (sentier des douaniers) allows walkers to follow the cliffs and discover nearby coves. Watersports such as sailing, sand yachting and shellfish gathering are popular, thanks to the notably strong tides typical of the Normandy coastline. Local seafood, including oysters, is a regional speciality. The area remains a popular base for exploring the wider Cotentin peninsula and its unspoilt coastal scenery.
