Plouarzel

Plouarzel is a commune in Finistère, located in the Pays d'Iroise on the north-western coast of Brittany, facing the Molène archipelago and the island of Ouessant. It is known for the Pointe de Corsen, regarded as the westernmost point of mainland France, and for the Trézien lighthouse, a 19th-century structure marking the approaches to the Ouessant shipping lane. Trez Hir beach, a long stretch of sand backed by dunes, is one of the area's main natural features and is suited to swimming, land yachting and surfing depending on conditions. The coastal footpath (GR34) runs along the shoreline, revealing a largely unspoilt coastline of rocky coves and sandy stretches. The commune retains a rural, maritime character, with a handful of local shops and markets offering Breton produce. Plouarzel makes a convenient base for exploring Le Conquet, Brest, or catching a boat to Ouessant and Molène, within a landscape shaped by strong winds and Brittany's oceanic climate.
