Penmarc'h

Penmarc'h is a coastal town in Finistère, at the south-western tip of the Pays Bigouden in Brittany. The area is dominated by the Eckmühl lighthouse, one of the tallest in France, standing alongside the remains of an older lighthouse nearby. The town centre retains the Saint-Nonna church, a reminder of the area's past prosperity linked to cod fishing. Several harbours make up the commune, including Saint-Pierre and Saint-Guénolé, the latter historically associated with fish canneries and known for its rocky shoreline, often photographed during winter storms when waves crash against the granite rocks. The coastline alternates between sandy beaches such as Pors Carn and exposed rocky stretches facing the Atlantic. The nearby Notre-Dame de la Joie chapel adds to the local religious heritage. The oceanic climate brings mild summers and windy winters, typical of this exposed Breton headland. The area remains closely tied to small-scale fishing and maritime life, and serves as a good base for exploring the wider Pays Bigouden, including Guilvinec and the Bay of Audierne.
