Tonnerre

Tonnerre is a small town in the Yonne department of Burgundy, crossed by the Armançon river and bordered by the Burgundy Canal. It is known for the Fosse Dionne, a natural spring set within a circular 18th-century washhouse, one of the town's most photographed sites. The former Hôtel-Dieu, founded in the 13th century by Marguerite of Burgundy, houses a striking medieval ward and reflects the town's hospital heritage. The Church of Saint-Pierre, perched on a rise, overlooks the historic centre. Tonnerre lies within a wine-producing area with its own local appellation, close to the Chablis vineyards and the Renaissance châteaux of Tanlay and Ancy-le-Franc, both popular for visits. Served by a railway station on the Paris–Dijon line, the town makes a convenient base for exploring the Burgundian countryside, its villages and walking routes along the canal. The surroundings remain quiet, shaped by understated architectural heritage and ongoing agricultural and wine-growing activity nearby.
