Marckolsheim

Marckolsheim is a town in the Bas-Rhin department, situated on the banks of the Rhine along the French-German border, in an area shaped by its military history: the town houses a memorial dedicated to the Maginot Line, reflecting the heritage of the Rhine's fortified sector. The bridge linking Marckolsheim to Sasbach on the German side facilitates cross-border exchanges. The surroundings are rural and river-based, ideal for walks along the Rhine and cycling along the Rhine cycle route. The town also serves as a convenient base for exploring Alsace's wine region: Colmar, with its historic centre and picturesque Little Venice district, lies around 30 kilometres away, while Eguisheim, a village listed among the most beautiful in France and known for its half-timbered houses and vineyards, is easily reached too. The Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, a restored medieval fortress overlooking the Alsace plain, rounds off the region's must-see sights, drawing many visitors keen to discover the surrounding Alsatian heritage.
