Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi is a refined seaside resort on the Versilia coast in Tuscany, known for its fine sandy beaches with views towards the Apuan Alps. The town takes its name from an 18th-century fort and its historical links to the Carrara marble trade, once shipped from its harbour via the landmark pier (pontile), which remains a notable feature today. The pedestrianised centre, around Via Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza Garibaldi, is home to fashion boutiques, restaurants and weekly markets known for local crafts and produce. The pine wood (pineta) provides a shaded area ideal for walking or cycling. Forte dei Marmi is also known for its private beach clubs (bagni), fitted with changing huts and sun loungers, and for its sophisticated atmosphere that has long attracted an affluent Italian clientele. Nearby, visitors can explore the marble quarries of Carrara or the neighbouring towns of Pietrasanta and Viareggio. The Mediterranean climate, mild throughout much of the year, makes it suitable for both summer holidays and off-season visits.
