Viareggio

Viareggio is a seaside resort on the Tuscan coast, in the province of Lucca, known for its long sandy beaches lined with organised bathing establishments and a lengthy palm-fringed promenade. The town is particularly famous for its historic carnival, one of Italy's most celebrated, featuring papier-mâché allegorical floats that have paraded through the streets since the late 19th century. Art Nouveau architecture, known locally as Liberty style, characterises the seafront, with landmark buildings such as the Gran Caffè Margherita. The harbour and the Darsena area offer a lively setting with seafood restaurants and traditional shipyards, yacht building being a significant economic activity in the town. Viareggio also serves as a convenient base for visiting the nearby cities of Lucca and Pisa, as well as the surrounding Tuscan hills. The Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers, supports seaside tourism from May to September. Local cuisine highlights seafood specialities, notably cacciucco, a traditional fish soup typical of the Tuscan coastal region.
