San Giuliano Terme

San Giuliano Terme is a town in Tuscany, in the province of Pisa, set at the foot of the Monte Pisano hills and crossed by the Serchio river. It has been known since antiquity for its sulphurous thermal springs, exploited as early as Roman times and later favoured by the Medici family, from whom the settlement takes its name. The historic spa establishment, now part of a hotel complex, remains a well-regarded destination for treatments and bathing in natural hot waters. The municipality is also home to the Certosa di Calci, a 14th-century Carthusian monastery converted into the University of Pisa's Natural History Museum, one of the area's principal cultural attractions. The Monte Pisano further offers walking trails and viewpoints over the surrounding plain. Pisa itself lies just a short drive away, roughly ten kilometres off, making it easy to visit the Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli. The Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild winters, makes the area suitable for visits throughout the year. San Giuliano Terme therefore serves as a quiet base for exploring the Tuscan countryside while remaining close to the region's major sights.
