Castiglioncello

Castiglioncello is a seaside resort on the Tuscan coast, in the province of Livorno, along the stretch known as the Costa degli Etruschi. The village is known for its rugged coastline of rocky cliffs and small coves, interspersed with sandy beaches, backed by a Mediterranean pine wood that runs down almost to the water's edge. The Castello Pasquini, a 19th-century building now used as a cultural venue, overlooks the seafront and serves as the village's architectural landmark. From the latter half of the 19th century onwards, Castiglioncello drew painters, notably the Macchiaioli group, who were drawn to the distinctive light along this part of the coast. The town remains a popular summer destination for Tuscan families, with a quieter atmosphere than nearby resorts such as Livorno or Viareggio. The surrounding area offers opportunities for coastal walks, swimming in sheltered coves, and day trips inland towards the coastal Chianti vineyards. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, means tourist activity is concentrated between June and September.
