Castelfiorentino

Castelfiorentino is a town in the Elsa Valley, in Tuscany's province of Florence. Lying along the historic Via Francigena pilgrim route, it retains a medieval-origin old town centred on the Collegiata di San Lorenzo. The town is also home to the Benozzo Gozzoli Museum, which displays frescoes by the Renaissance painter, originally from a local religious tabernacle. The nineteenth-century Teatro del Popolo further reflects the town's historic character. The surrounding countryside offers classic Tuscan scenery, with rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards, ideal for walking and sampling regional produce such as olive oil and wines from the nearby Chianti area. Castelfiorentino makes a convenient base for exploring nearby cities including Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra, all within an hour's drive. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, makes spring and autumn particularly pleasant times to visit, allowing travellers to enjoy the quiet countryside and slower pace of this small Tuscan town away from the busier tourist trails.
