Certaldo

Certaldo, in the province of Florence in Tuscany, is made up of two distinct parts: the more modern lower town and Certaldo Alto, the medieval hilltop settlement also reachable by funicular. This historic core, with its red-brick houses and cobbled lanes, is best known as the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, author of the Decameron, whose house-museum can be visited today. The Palazzo Pretorio, its façade adorned with coats of arms, overlooks the main square and reflects the town's communal past. The surrounding countryside, typical of rural Tuscany, features rolling hills covered in vineyards and olive groves, ideal for walks and sampling local produce such as Chianti wine and olive oil. Certaldo is also known locally for its garlic production, celebrated in the area. Its location between Florence and Siena makes it a convenient base for exploring the Chianti region and nearby art towns such as San Gimignano. The atmosphere remains calm and unspoilt, offering a quieter alternative to Tuscany's busier tourist centres and a genuine taste of Italian rural life.
