Poggibonsi

Poggibonsi is a town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, often used as a convenient base for exploring the heart of the region thanks to its central location between Siena, Florence and San Gimignano. The town retains the Fortezza Medicea, a fortress of medieval origin later remodelled under the Medici, along with the religious complex of San Lucchese on the hill of the same name. Unlike some of the more touristy Tuscan villages, Poggibonsi has a more industrial and commercial character, making it a practical logistical base with generally more affordable prices than the nearby heritage-listed villages. The surrounding countryside offers a typical Tuscan landscape of vineyards and olive groves, particularly towards Chianti and the Val d'Elsa. The railway station makes travel to Siena and Florence straightforward, and the A1 motorway is close by. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, suits visits throughout the year, though spring and autumn remain the most pleasant seasons for exploring the surrounding hills and medieval hilltop towns.
