Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni is a fortified medieval village in the province of Siena, Tuscany, roughly fifteen kilometres north of the city of Siena. It is best known for its remarkably well-preserved circular walls, punctuated by fourteen towers and dating back to the 13th century, which crown a small hill surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. This fortification, referenced by Dante in the Divine Comedy, stands as one of Italy's finest surviving examples of medieval defensive architecture. The compact village centre can be explored on foot within minutes and features a central square, a Romanesque church, and a handful of shops and restaurants serving traditional Tuscan fare. The village lies along the historic route of the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrim road linking Canterbury to Rome, making it a popular stopover for walkers. The surrounding countryside, typical of the Sienese hills, is ideal for strolls through vineyards and olive groves, while Siena, San Gimignano and Colle di Val d'Elsa are all within easy reach for day trips. The area's mild Mediterranean climate makes it a pleasant destination to visit from spring through to autumn.
