Colle Val d'Elsa

Colle di Val d'Elsa is a town in Tuscany, in the province of Siena, situated between Florence and Siena along the Elsa valley. The town is divided into two distinct parts: Colle Alta, the medieval upper town perched on a rocky ridge, with its narrow lanes, stone palazzi and Duomo, and Colle Bassa, the more modern lower district. The town has a long-standing tradition in glass and crystal production, an artisanal and industrial activity that earned it the nickname 'city of crystal', showcased at the local Crystal Museum. Colle di Val d'Elsa is also the birthplace of the architect and sculptor Arnolfo di Cambio. The Via Francigena, the historic pilgrim route to Rome, passes through the municipality, making it a popular stop for walkers and cyclists. The surrounding countryside offers a classic Tuscan landscape of vineyards and olive groves, close to the Chianti region. Its location allows for easy day trips to San Gimignano, Siena and Florence, while offering a quieter, less touristy base than those larger cities.
