Boccheggiano

Boccheggiano is a small village within the municipality of Montieri, in the province of Grosseto, set in the heart of the Colline Metallifere (Metal-Bearing Hills) in the Tuscan Maremma. The hamlet retains traces of its mining past, linked to the extraction of iron, copper and pyrite, which shaped the local economy for centuries before the mines gradually closed during the 20th century. Built on a hillside, the village offers a typical rural Tuscan setting, with cobbled lanes, stone houses and views over surrounding oak and chestnut woodlands. The area is well suited to walking and cycling, particularly along trails connecting the former mining sites scattered across the Colline Metallifere. The surrounding countryside produces olive oil, wine and chestnuts, staples of Maremma's gastronomy. The Mediterranean climate, tempered by moderate altitude, brings warm, dry summers and mild winters. Boccheggiano makes a quiet base from which to explore rural Tuscany, within easy reach of towns such as Massa Marittima and Grosseto, away from the crowds of the region's major historic centres.
