Scarlino

Scarlino is a town in the southern Tuscan province of Grosseto, within the Maremma region, on the Gulf of Follonica. The historic hilltop village, overlooked by the medieval Rocca di Scarlino castle, offers views over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the island of Elba, contrasting with the coastal area of Puntone di Scarlino, home to a lively marina in summer. The area is known for its beaches, including the well-regarded Cala Violina, reached on foot through a pine forest, as well as surrounding nature reserves such as the Riserva Naturale delle Bandite di Scarlino, ideal for walking and observing Mediterranean flora and fauna. The wider region also bears traces of Etruscan settlement and former iron-mining activity typical of the Maremma. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, supports outdoor activities and seaside life from May to September. Scarlino also serves as a convenient base for exploring Punta Ala, Follonica and the Tuscan coast, combining historical heritage, unspoilt natural landscapes and local cuisine built around seafood and Maremma produce.
