Montalcino

Montalcino is a medieval hilltop town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, close to the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia. The town is dominated by its 14th-century fortress, the Rocca, whose ramparts offer sweeping views over the surrounding vineyards. The historic centre, with its cobbled lanes and stone façades, houses the Palazzo dei Priori with its bell tower, along with several Romanesque and Gothic churches such as Sant'Agostino. Montalcino is best known for its wine, Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy's most prestigious reds, made exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown in this area. Numerous wineries and cellars in the immediate surroundings offer tastings and tours. The region is also well suited to walking and exploring the Sienese hills, amid olive groves and vineyards. The area is dotted with charming small villages and abbeys, including the Abbey of Sant'Antimo just a few kilometres away. Local gastronomy showcases Tuscan produce, including cured meats, sheep's milk cheeses, and seasonal dishes featuring wild boar or mushrooms.
