Paganico

Paganico is a village in the Tuscan Maremma, part of the municipality of Civitella Paganico in the province of Grosseto. Built around a fortified medieval core, it still retains sections of its old town walls and gates, reflecting its history as a defensive settlement along the route linking Siena to the Tyrrhenian coast. The village lies along the Ombrone river, amid the rolling countryside typical of southern Tuscany, with wooded hills, vineyards and olive groves. The surrounding area produces Montecucco, a local DOC wine popular with those interested in wine tourism. Nearby are the Petriolo hot springs, natural open-air thermal waters known since Roman times. Paganico makes a convenient base for exploring the Maremma, offering hiking in the hills, visits to nearby small Tuscan villages, and day trips to Siena or Grosseto, both under an hour's drive away. The Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild winters, makes it suitable for countryside stays throughout the year, set in a calm, genuine rural environment away from the busier tourist centres of Tuscany.
