Roccastrada

Roccastrada is a municipality in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany, set within the Colline Metallifere (Metal-bearing Hills), a hilly area straddling the Maremma and the Tuscan uplands. The town retains traces of its medieval past, with a historic centre built around the remains of an old rocca (fortress) from which its name derives. The municipality includes several traditional hamlets such as Roccatederighi, Sassofortino and Torniella, each preserving an authentic rural character. The area has a long mining heritage, particularly around Ribolla, before shifting towards agriculture and rural tourism. The surrounding landscape, with wooded hills, olive groves and vineyards, is well suited to walking and exploring the Tuscan countryside away from the busier tourist routes. Local cuisine makes good use of olive oil, chestnuts and woodland produce. Roccastrada offers a quiet base from which to explore the Maremma, its hilltop villages and hinterland, in a genuine and largely unspoilt setting.
