Eguisheim

Eguisheim is an Alsatian village at the foot of the Vosges mountains, within the Haut-Rhin wine region, just a few kilometres from Colmar. It is known for its distinctive circular layout, a legacy of its medieval fortifications, and for its colourful half-timbered houses, adorned with geraniums during the summer months. The Saint-Léon Chapel, a round tower at the village centre, marks the presumed birthplace of Pope Leo IX. Eguisheim lies within the Alsace wine appellation, particularly known for Gewurztraminer and Riesling, and numerous wineries offer tastings and cellar tours. The village was voted the French people's favourite village in 2013, which boosted its tourist appeal, especially during the Christmas market held each December. Its cobbled lanes are ideal for a leisurely stroll, featuring fountains, wrought-iron shop signs and traditional inner courtyards. The Alsace Wine Route runs through the commune, offering views over the surrounding vine-covered hills. The semi-continental climate, drier than elsewhere in Alsace, makes the area well suited to walking and cycling, notably towards the Grand Ballon and the Vosges ridgeline.
