Città della Pieve

Città della Pieve is a small medieval hill town in Umbria, perched near the border with Tuscany in the province of Perugia. It is best known as the birthplace of the painter Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino, whose works can be seen in the Cathedral of Saints Gervasius and Protasius and in the Oratory of Santa Maria dei Bianchi, home to his renowned Adoration of the Magi. The town is notable for its red-brick architecture, a material typical of the area, and for its narrow lanes, including Via Baciadonne, said to be one of the narrowest streets in Italy. The historic centre retains traces of its old fortifications, including the Rocca and several original gateways. Città della Pieve is also known for its saffron production, grown locally using traditional methods. The surrounding countryside, typical of the Umbrian-Tuscan borderland, features rolling hills planted with olive groves and vineyards, ideal for walking and agritourism. Its location, close to Lake Trasimeno and towns such as Orvieto and Chiusi, makes it a convenient base for exploring this part of central Italy, away from the busier art cities.
