Grosseto

Grosseto is the capital of the Tuscan Maremme in Italy, a region known for its landscape of rolling hills, farmland and Tyrrhenian coastline. The historic centre retains its Renaissance walls, the Mura Medicee, built in the 16th century under the Medici, which still encircle the old town and make for a popular walk. San Lorenzo Cathedral and Piazza Dante form the heart of the city. Grosseto lies just a few kilometres from the beaches of Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare, both popular in summer. Nearby, the Parco Naturale della Maremma offers protected countryside ideal for walking, wildlife spotting and exploring dunes and pine forests. The area is also known for its traditional cattle farming, with horsemen known as butteri, as well as for its wines, including Morellino di Scansano. The city serves as a convenient base for exploring the Maremme, its medieval villages and the surrounding Tuscan countryside, while enjoying a pleasant Mediterranean climate for much of the year.
