Monte Argentario

Monte Argentario is a rocky promontory on the Tuscan coast, in the province of Grosseto, linked to the mainland by three sandy strips (tomboli) that enclose the Orbetello lagoon, a protected wetland and nature reserve. The area comprises two main villages, Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano, both shaped by a strong maritime heritage and by Spanish fortifications dating from the 16th century, when the region formed part of the Spanish Presidi, including Forte Stella and Forte Filippo. Porto Ercole is also known as the place where the painter Caravaggio died in 1610. The coastline, dotted with coves and cliffs, is well suited to diving, sailing and boat excursions, including trips to the island of Giglio, reachable by ferry from Porto Santo Stefano. The Tombolo della Feniglia, a pine-fringed sandbar, is another protected nature reserve popular for its beaches and its walking and cycling trails. With its Mediterranean climate, maquis-covered landscapes and traditional fishing villages, Monte Argentario remains a well-regarded destination for coastal and nautical tourism.
