Lago di Bolsena

Lake Bolsena, in northern Lazio (province of Viterbo), is the largest volcanic lake in Europe and one of Italy's largest lakes. Its shores host several medieval towns, including Bolsena itself, home to the Basilica of Santa Cristina, linked to the Eucharistic miracle of 1263, and Montefiascone, known for its Est! Est!! Est!!! white wine. Other villages such as Marta, Capodimonte and San Lorenzo Nuovo also line the lake, each retaining modest but genuine architectural heritage, with cobbled lanes and remnants of old fortifications. The lake's calm, spring-fed waters are well suited to swimming, sailing, windsurfing and fishing, particularly for coregone, a whitefish that features regularly on local menus. Two islands, Bisentina and Martana, add interest to the landscape and can be visited on boat trips. The surrounding countryside, shaped by volcanic hills and vineyards, provides a peaceful rural setting away from major tourist crowds, well suited to travellers seeking nature, local food and a relaxed pace.
