Orte

Orte is a town in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region, built on a plateau of volcanic tuff overlooking the Tiber valley. Its historic centre, with narrow medieval streets, retains an ancient urban layout with several religious buildings, including the cathedral dedicated to Saint Nicholas and the church of San Silvestro. The town is known for its underground network of galleries and cisterns carved into the tuff rock, which have been developed and opened to visitors, reflecting their historic use for storing water and provisions. A Renaissance fountain, the Fontana Grande, is also a notable feature of the townscape. Orte serves as an important railway junction on the lines connecting Rome and Florence, making it a convenient base for exploring the Tuscia area and the Tiber valley. The surrounding countryside offers a typical Lazio landscape of olive groves, vineyards and hills, ideal for walks and day trips to nearby villages such as Civita di Bagnoregio or Bomarzo. The mild Mediterranean climate makes the area pleasant to visit for much of the year, with warm summers and gentle winters.
