Gessopalena

Gessopalena is a village in Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, on the edge of the Majella National Park. The site bears the marks of twentieth-century history: the old town, partly destroyed during Second World War fighting along the Gustav Line, gave way to a rebuilt village nearby, while the ruins of the historic centre remain as a reminder of that period. The area is also known for the extraction of local limestone, known as pietra di Gessopalena, traditionally used in regional building. The mountainous surroundings offer landscapes typical of inland Abruzzo, well suited to walking and exploring the natural surroundings of the Majella massif. Local cuisine follows Abruzzese tradition, featuring regional produce such as cheeses, olive oil and handmade pasta. The climate is continental, with moderately warm summers and cool winters at altitude. Gessopalena makes a quiet base for exploring the surrounding villages and the natural heritage of the national park, away from the busier coastal resorts.
