Gallipoli

Gallipoli is a town in Puglia, on the Ionian coast of the Salento peninsula, known for its historic centre built on a rocky islet linked to the mainland by a bridge. This old quarter, encircled by ancient walls, features narrow lanes, whitewashed houses and the Angevin castle overlooking the seafront. The baroque Sant'Agata Cathedral, with its elaborately decorated façade, reflects the town's rich religious heritage. Gallipoli is also known for its active fishing port, where seafood plays a central role in local cuisine, particularly raw shellfish and freshly caught fish served in the trattorias of the old town. The town also stretches along fine sandy beaches such as Baia Verde, popular in summer and lined with beach clubs. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, makes it a popular seaside destination from June to September. Gallipoli also serves as a convenient base for exploring other towns in the Salento area, such as Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca, within a region renowned for its coastal scenery and baroque architecture.
