Orosei

Orosei is a town on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, in the province of Nuoro, set along the gulf that bears its name. The historic centre is notable for its ochre and rust-toned houses built from local stone and trachyte, arranged around small squares and narrow lanes typical of traditional Sardinian architecture. Several religious buildings punctuate the village, including the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore, the main place of worship, alongside smaller chapels such as Sa Itria and Su Rimediu. A few kilometres from the centre lies the coastline, with sandy beaches like Su Barone at the mouth of the Cedrino river, set within an unspoilt landscape of dunes and pine woods. Further south, the Gulf of Orosei is renowned for its steep limestone cliffs dropping into turquoise waters, sea caves and secluded coves mostly reached by boat or after lengthy hikes. Local cuisine reflects Sardinian tradition, featuring dishes such as culurgiones, malloreddus and carasau bread, typically paired with Cannonau wine. The area is well suited to walking, diving and boat excursions along a stretch of coast that remains largely undeveloped.
