Zadar

Zadar, a coastal city in northern Dalmatia, is known for its old town with narrow lanes running down to the Adriatic Sea. One of its most distinctive features is the sea organ, an installation that produces soothing sounds as the waves move beneath it, making the waterfront a pleasant spot for a stroll. From Zadar, it's easy to reach Plitvice Lakes National Park by car or coach, roughly a 1.5 to 2-hour drive, where a series of 16 turquoise lakes are linked by wooden footpaths and served by a small electric train or boat. Krka National Park, which is closer, also makes for a good day trip. The surrounding islands, including the Kornati archipelago, can be explored on boat excursions, while the hinterland offers mountain walks for those looking beyond the beaches. For a bite to eat, the Tri bunara pizzeria is well regarded for its pizzas, and the local ice cream is also worth trying. Overall, Zadar makes a solid base for combining city sightseeing, natural parks and island trips along the Dalmatian coast.
