Innsbruck

The capital of Tyrol, Innsbruck sits in a valley along the River Inn, framed by the Nordkette range and the Tyrolean Alps, making it a popular destination throughout the year. The old town, with its Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) and colourful façades, is easily explored on foot, winding through cobbled lanes and lively squares. The Imperial Palace (Hofburg) and the Court Church (Hofkirche), home to the cenotaph of Emperor Maximilian I, reflect the city's imperial past. Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1964 and 1976, leaving behind the iconic Bergisel ski jump, which offers striking views over the city. The Nordkette cable car provides quick access to the surrounding peaks, ideal for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. Tyrolean cuisine, featuring knödel and cheese-based dishes, rounds out the local experience. Altogether, the city combines historical heritage, an alpine setting and sporting infrastructure, making it a favoured stop for cultural or mountain-based holidays.
