Wildschönau

Wildschönau is a valley in the Austrian Tyrol (postcode 6311), comprising the villages of Niederau, Oberau, Auffach and Thierbach, set between 800 and 900 metres above sea level. The region is known for the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, shared with the neighbouring Alpbachtal valley, offering downhill pistes, cross-country trails and snowshoeing routes in winter. In summer, the valley draws hikers and mountain bikers thanks to its network of marked trails leading to peaks such as the Schatzberg and Markbachjoch, as well as to numerous alpine pastures where traditional farming is still practised. Wildschönau is also recognised for its long-standing distilling tradition, notably Krautinger, a protected-designation pear brandy that has been produced locally for generations. The typically Tyrolean landscape, dotted with timber chalets and green meadows, adds to the area's authentic character. Accommodation options range from farmhouse guesthouses to holiday flats, making it a peaceful alpine base suitable for both relaxation and outdoor activities throughout the year.
