Ahtari

Ahtari, known in Finnish as Ähtäri, is a small town in the South Ostrobothnia region of Finland, set amid forests and lakes, including Lake Pihlajavesi. The town is best known for Ähtäri Zoo, home since 2018 to a pair of giant pandas, Lumi and Pyry, on loan from China, alongside various native Nordic species such as brown bears, wolves and lynxes kept in spacious, semi-natural enclosures. The park also offers walking trails and areas dedicated to local wildlife. Ahtari serves as a popular base for year-round outdoor activities, from hiking and swimming in summer to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter, all within a typical Finnish countryside setting. The sparsely populated surrounding region is valued for its tranquillity and wooded landscapes, dotted with traditional timber cottages around the lakes.
