Nurmes

Nurmes is a small town in North Karelia, Finland, set on the shores of Lake Pielinen. The wooden district of Old Nurmes (Vanha Nurmes), with its colourful traditional houses, is one of the town's most distinctive features. Nearby, the Bomba cultural centre, inspired by traditional Karelian architecture, offers insight into local history and customs, along with a restaurant serving regional Karelian specialities, including the well-known karjalanpiirakka pastries. Nurmes also serves as a convenient gateway to Koli National Park, known for its wooded hills overlooking Lake Pielinen, around forty kilometres away. The area lends itself to year-round outdoor activities: hiking and swimming in summer, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing in winter. The northern continental climate brings mild, bright summers with long daylight hours, alongside cold, snowy winters well suited to winter sports. Sauna culture, a cornerstone of Finnish life, plays an important role locally, often linked with relaxed moments by the lakeside.
