Kitee

Kitee is a small town in the North Karelia region of eastern Finland, close to the Russian border. The surrounding landscape is typical of this part of Finland, featuring extensive coniferous forests, numerous lakes and a quiet rural setting. The town is particularly known for its proximity to Lake Puruvesi, renowned for its exceptionally clear waters, making it a popular spot for swimming, fishing and boating during the summer months. In winter, the area lends itself well to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing, all traditional pursuits in Finnish Karelia. Lakeside cabins, known locally as mökki, are a common form of accommodation in the area, offering a peaceful base close to nature. Kitee remains a low-key destination, away from major tourist routes, well suited to those seeking tranquillity, open natural spaces and direct contact with the Scandinavian countryside, in an authentic and largely unspoilt setting.
