Juuka

Juuka is a small municipality in the North Karelia region of eastern Finland, set within a landscape typical of boreal forests and lakes. The area is particularly known for the village of Nunnanlahti, recognised for its soapstone (vuolukivi) quarrying and craftsmanship, traditionally used to make stoves and fireplaces; several workshops and sites linked to this craft can be visited locally. Surrounded by woodland and numerous bodies of water, Juuka offers plenty of scope for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, berry and mushroom picking in season, as well as cross-country skiing and snowmobiling during winter. The region lies close to Koli National Park, one of Finland's most iconic landscapes, making Juuka a convenient base for exploring the surrounding countryside. The continental climate brings long, snowy winters and short but bright summers, including midnight sun in June. Juuka remains a quiet, understated destination, valued for its tranquillity, unspoilt nature and genuine rural Finnish character.
