Joensuu

Joensuu is the regional capital of North Karelia in eastern Finland, close to the Russian border. Founded in the mid-19th century on the banks of the Pielisjoki river, near Lake Pyhäselkä, the town grew through the timber and paper trade. It is now home to a campus of the University of Eastern Finland, giving it a sizeable student population and a lively atmosphere. The market square (Kauppatori) remains a focal point of local life, with stalls offering Karelian specialities such as karjalanpiirakka, a traditional rice-filled pastry. The university's botanical garden provides a popular spot for a stroll. The town is also known for hosting the Ilosaari Rock Festival each summer, one of Finland's longest-running music events. Joensuu is a convenient gateway to Koli National Park, renowned for its wooded hills and views over Lake Pielinen. The continental climate brings long, snowy winters well suited to outdoor pursuits such as cross-country skiing, alongside short but bright summers with the nordic midnight sun.
