Kuopio

Kuopio is a city in eastern Finland, located in the North Savo region on the shores of Lake Kallavesi, part of the country's extensive lake network. The Puijo hill, topped by its observation tower, offers panoramic views over the town and surrounding forests, and is a well-known local landmark, particularly popular for skiing and outdoor activities in winter. The covered market hall (Kauppahalli) in the town centre is known for regional produce, including kalakukko, a traditional dish of fish baked inside rye bread with bacon. Kuopio is also home to Finland's Orthodox Church Museum, reflecting the region's distinctive religious heritage. As the seat of the University of Eastern Finland, the city has a strong student character. The continental climate brings long, snowy winters well suited to Nordic sports, along with short but bright summers. The surrounding lakes and forests provide ample opportunities for hiking, fishing and sauna bathing, the latter being a central cultural activity throughout the region.
