Iisalmi

Iisalmi is a town in central Finland, located in the Ylä-Savo region of Northern Savonia, on the shores of Lake Porovesi. It is notably home to the headquarters of Olvi, one of Finland's oldest and largest breweries. The town's old wooden church, dating from the 19th century, offers an interesting example of local architectural heritage. Iisalmi also holds a place in Finnish military history through the Battle of Koljonvirta, fought in 1808 during the war between Sweden and Russia. The town is further associated with the Finnish writer Juhani Aho, who came from the surrounding area. The climate is continental, with long, cold winters well suited to activities such as cross-country skiing and ice fishing, alongside short but mild summers. Iisalmi serves as a convenient base for exploring the lake-dotted, forested landscapes typical of Northern Savonia, as well as the surrounding rural countryside, long shaped by dairy farming and agricultural traditions.
