Enontekiö

Enontekiö is a municipality in Finnish Lapland, located in the far north-west of the country, bordering both Norway and Sweden. This sparsely populated area spans a vast landscape of fells, tundra and boreal forest, dominated by the Kilpisjärvi mountain range and Halti, Finland's highest peak. The village of Hetta, the municipal centre, serves as a gateway to the surrounding national parks, including Pallas-Yllästunturi and the Käsivarsi wilderness area. The region is well known for northern lights viewing in winter and the midnight sun in summer, providing ideal conditions for hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and fishing. Sámi culture remains particularly present in this area, with reindeer herding traditions still very much alive. The subarctic climate brings long, harsh winters, with temperatures often dropping well below -20°C, alongside short but bright summers. Enontekiö appeals to those seeking wild, unspoilt nature and tranquillity, away from the more developed tourist areas found elsewhere in Lapland.
