Muonio

Muonio is a small municipality in Finnish Lapland, located on the border with Sweden along the Muonionjoki river. With around 2,300 residents, this village serves as a well-known base for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby lies Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, one of Finland's oldest and most visited, offering hiking trails and fells ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The area is also known for husky and snowmobile safaris, as well as for viewing the Northern Lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer. The Harriniva centre, set on the riverbanks, offers husky and reindeer-related activities throughout the year. Muonio has a subarctic climate with long, harsh winters and reliable snow cover, ideal for winter sports, along with short but bright summers. The village remains a popular starting point for exploring Lapland's wilderness, with its boreal forests, rivers and unspoiled Arctic landscapes, away from the bustle of larger tourist resorts.
