Posio

Posio is a small municipality in Finnish Lapland, on the border with the North Ostrobothnia region, often described as the 'heart of Lapland' due to its central geographical position. The area is best known for its proximity to Riisitunturi National Park, famous for trees blanketed in compacted snow (known locally as 'tykkylumi'), creating a distinctive winter landscape, as well as for the Korouoma canyon, where frozen waterfalls draw hikers and ice climbers during the colder months. The region is dotted with numerous lakes, including Livojärvi, popular for fishing and water-based activities in summer. Posio retains a strong rural identity and a tradition of reindeer herding, surrounded by dense forests and largely unspoilt countryside. Clear night skies and its remoteness from major cities make it a favoured spot for viewing the Northern Lights in season. Accommodation mainly consists of timber cabins and cottages scattered across the natural surroundings, well suited to quiet, nature-focused holidays centred on hiking, cross-country skiing and observing local wildlife.
