Locmariaquer

Locmariaquer lies in the Morbihan department, at the tip of a peninsula that encloses the Gulf of Morbihan opposite the Rhuys peninsula. The town is best known for its major megalithic site, which includes the Great Broken Menhir, the Merchants' Table and the Er Grah tumulus, remnants of Neolithic settlement in the region, managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux. The local economy remains closely tied to oyster farming, with numerous oyster beds visible along the shoreline and huts offering fresh oysters for tasting. The village retains a small sheltered harbour, a starting point for boat trips to the islands within the gulf. Pointe de Kerpenhir offers views over the gulf's entrance and its strong tidal currents, making it popular for sailing and kayaking. The sandy beaches, quieter than those along the nearby Atlantic coast, draw family visitors during the summer months. The temperate oceanic climate allows for visits throughout the year, though footfall increases notably between June and September. Locmariaquer serves as a convenient base for exploring the Gulf of Morbihan and the nearby Quiberon peninsula.
