Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, is best known as the official hometown of Father Christmas, with the dedicated village located just north of the city, right on the Arctic Circle line. The region draws visitors with its Nordic landscapes, coniferous forests, and the chance to see the Northern Lights during the winter season, typically between September and March. In winter, the city serves as a base for numerous activities, including husky and snowmobile safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, and stays in glass igloos for a chance to spot the aurora. Summer, though quieter for tourism, offers the midnight sun phenomenon along with activities such as hiking and canoeing on the Kemijoki River, which runs through the city. Rovaniemi was largely rebuilt after the Second World War, and its current layout reflects modern urban planning designed by architect Alvar Aalto. The city also has well-developed tourist infrastructure, with an international airport providing easy access from several European countries during the peak winter season.
