Salla

Salla is a municipality in Finnish Lapland, located roughly 130 kilometres east of Rovaniemi, close to the Russian border. It is sometimes described as one of the coldest places in Finland during winter, a reputation linked to its pronounced continental climate. The area is home to Salla National Park, established in 2022, offering hiking trails through boreal forests and peatland areas. The Sallatunturi resort provides downhill skiing slopes and cross-country routes, along with winter activities such as snowmobiling, husky sledding and northern lights viewing, aided by minimal light pollution. The local economy remains tied to forestry, tourism and reindeer herding, a traditional practice in Lapland. Accommodation in the area mainly consists of cabins and lodges suited to nature-based tourism, both in winter and summer. Its proximity to the Russian border gives Salla a distinctive geographical position within the Lapland region, although it remains a modest destination compared with Finland's larger tourist centres.
