Sodankylä

Sodankylä is a municipality in Finnish Lapland, situated on the banks of the Kitinen River, roughly 100 km north of Rovaniemi. One of the largest municipalities in Finland by area, it is characterised by boreal forests, peatlands and the Sompio Nature Reserve, home to a range of Arctic wildlife. The region has a long tradition of reindeer husbandry, still visible in the surrounding countryside. Each summer, Sodankylä hosts the Midnight Sun Film Festival, taking advantage of the continuous daylight typical of this time of year. The town is also home to a geophysical observatory, reflecting its role in Arctic research. Nearby, the village of Tankavaara recalls Lapland's gold rush history, with a museum dedicated to that era. The fells of Luosto and Pyhä, offering hiking trails and ski slopes, lie within a short drive. In winter, the area provides favourable conditions for viewing the Northern Lights, while summer brings the midnight sun. The subarctic climate brings long, harsh winters in stark contrast to short but bright summers.
