Ylitornio

Ylitornio is a municipality in Finnish Lapland, situated along the Tornio River, which forms the border with Sweden opposite its twin town, Övertorneå. The area lies within the Tornedalen valley, known for its bilingual Finnish-Swedish heritage and the regional Meänkieli language. The municipality's best-known landmark is Aavasaksa Hill, celebrated since the 19th century as one of Europe's finest spots to observe the midnight sun, making it a popular summer destination. The surrounding landscape is typical of northern Finland, featuring boreal forests, rivers and a tranquil setting well suited to hiking, fishing and wildlife watching. In winter, snow cover and polar nights create ideal conditions for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and, depending on conditions, the northern lights.
