Porvoo

Porvoo, Finland's second-oldest town, lies along the Porvoonjoki river some fifty kilometres east of Helsinki. Its old town, with cobbled lanes and timber houses, is best known for the row of red-ochre riverside warehouses that have become one of the country's most photographed sights. The medieval Porvoo Cathedral, damaged by fire in 2006 and since restored, overlooks the historic quarter. The town is closely associated with national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, whose former home is now a museum; the Runeberg torte, a pastry named after him, remains a local culinary speciality tied to the area. Small craft shops, galleries and cafés give the historic centre a relaxed atmosphere well suited to leisurely walks. In summer, steamboat services occasionally connect Helsinki and Porvoo, offering a scenic route through the archipelago. The Brunberg chocolate factory, based in the town, is another well-known local feature. Porvoo is a popular choice for a day trip, combining architectural heritage, history and a calm coastal setting.
